About Lynn

Lynn Hunter is running for Victoria City Council because she wants to make a great city even better. She is proud of Victoria’s neighbourhoods, community spirit and natural beauty, and wants to put her passion and experience to work to make it an even better place to live, work, and raise a family.

Lynn is a community leader on issues and values that Victorians share. She has a lengthy career with organizations promoting social justice and democracy and has worked for environmental organizations seeking to preserve our natural environment and its resources for future generations.

Lynn will bring experience to Council decision-making and ensure a broad perspective that includes the economic, social and environmental benefits of each decision. Her lengthy experience in public service has taught her how to bring diverse people together to solve problems and make good decisions.

Lynn wants to get to work immediately on key issues facing our city, including the lack of affordable housing and the need for a comprehensive public transit system. She wants to continue to make Victoria more liveable and pedestrian-friendly and will champion a safe and commercially viable downtown.

Lynn’s public service achievements include:

  • Protecting British Columbia’s wild salmon resource as an Aquaculture Specialist and Spokesperson for the David Suzuki Foundation, the Coastal Alliance for Aquaculture Reform and the Pacific Northwest Pure Salmon Campaign.
  • Deputy Environment Critic and Member of Parliament for Saanich and the Gulf Islands (1988-1993). Served on the federal Parliament’s Constitution Committee on democratic reform, the External Affairs committee to relieve debt in the developing world and the Environment Committee that made recommendations on climate change and global warming.
  • Vancouver Island Coordinator for Oxfam Canada (1985-88). Participated in a fact-finding tour of conflict zones in the Sudan and Eritrea.
  • Working abroad providing training on building democratic institutions, most recently in Albania.

Lynn’s volunteer activities include:

  • Current chair of the local chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society, Vice-Chair BC- Yukon Division and Chair of the National Government Relations Committee.
  • Actively involved with First Unitarian Church of Victoria congregation.

Lynn lives in Fairfield where she enjoys walking and cycling. She recently participated in the MS Society’s bike-a-thon fundraiser through the Cowichan Valley. Lynn also loves to explore Victoria’s beaches and parks with her two grandchildren.
